Internet Support
With so many ISPs (Internet service providers) available, it
can be difficult
to make the right choice for your needs and budget.
Dial-up connections using standard
modems can offer light to moderate users with simple 'pay-as-you-go'
(a local call charge whilst on-line) or monthly subscription packages
that allow specific or unlimited on-line hours.
BroadBand connections with an
ADSL (digital line) modem are now the most popular service for more
intensive users. The faster speed of viewing Web pages, downloading
programs, media and updates make the Internet
a much more practical and entertaining resource.
It is most important
that you choose the right ISP. Charges and the included services on
offer vary greatly.
Another consideration, for an 'always on' broadband connection
is one of security, your PC will need greater protection (see the
Security section).

Sharing an
Internet connection
If you have, or are thinking of having, a small network
then a special device called a 'gateway router' can efficiently share
Internet access to all PCs.
And remember that networks are not just for
businesses, if you have more than one PC in your home it could be
a very useful option.
