PC problems fall into two main categories:
Hardware
If your PC begins beeping more than once on start-up, then you have
a problem with an internal component. The power supply can fail, the
main processor can die or maybe something becomes disconnected. A
faulty keyboard or mouse can also cause the problem.
If the PC becomes very noisy, then the hard disk might be failing.
Fans can fail causing overheating, putting the CPU at risk...
...the list, unfortunately goes on.
Software
More likely to happen are problems
relating to the installed software notably the operating system. Corrupt
or missing files can cause the PC to fail to run Windows.
Who has not experienced 'crashes' within Windows, less common
with Windows XP, how will Vista fare?

Maintenance
Many of the software related problems can be avoided with regular
PC maintenance. Windows has a number of built-in tools that can help
with keeping your hard disk happy; disk checking,
disk cleanup and the defragmenter
should be employed regularly.
Use the System Restore utility with Windows
XP, to create a 'restore' point before adding new hardware/software.
Then if things go wrong you can take your PC back to those pre-installation
settings.
Keep an eye on how much free disk space you have, remove old programs
and games that are no longer required. Check all those icons at the
right of the bottom task bar, these programs are all being run at
start-up and using your memory resource - do you need them?
