The need to protect your computer
If you never plug your PC into a phone socket to go on-line and
you never insert other peoples disks you can safely ignore this
section.
But for the rest of us - consider the following for a secure PC.
Computer Viruses
It is an unfortunate fact that malicious people out there consider
it fun to disrupt and corrupt our computers. There seems no end
to their ingenious methods of infecting us with viruses and worms
that take over e-mail applications, crash systems, delete files
and generally cause frustration and despair.
The first line of protection is to install an efficient virus scanner,
like F-Secure. But remember this is not an install
and forget operation, with new viruses being produced every day,
the virus scanner is only as good as it's latest virus pattern updates.
Always keep your scanner up to date.
SpyWare
Another form of threat, not caught by antivirus programs.
These can use cookies and small programs to track your Internet
usage, hijack your search engines and change your home page.
One of the best tools for protection is Spyware Doctor. There are
free tools too, downloaded from these links:
Trojans and Backdoor nastiness
Unfortunately the virus scanner cannot protect your on-line PC from
all the threats out there. Small programs called 'trojans' can infiltrate
through the open ports of a PC and can then be used to manipulated
and examine the contents of your hard drive. Protection from these requires a FireWall.
Windows Updates
A Windows PC is further subject to security 'holes' and flaws. As
these are discovered Microsoft produce security 'patches', these should
be downloaded from the Internet Update site.
